The memorial takes the form of a traditional lychgate, constructed from stone walls, timber and with a slate roof. Mounted on the inside stone walls of the lychgate are brass plaques on wooden panels which commemorate those who gave their lives. The memorial forms the entrance to the grounds to All Saints Church in Wellington.
In 2015 a grant of £10,305 was offered for repair and conservation work. The memorial was in poor condition; areas of the stonework had deteriorated and mortar in the construction joints were either defective or missing. Historically the lychgate had been painted in an anti-graffiti paint which needed to be removed. Additionally the steps leading to the lychgate were uneven and had moved. To address these issues the stonework cleaned and deteriorated stones were replaced on a like for like basis, re-pointed with a lime mortar was also undertaken and the areas of render were repainted. Repairs were undertaken to the steps and associated handrails and
the inscription on the timber arch was re-gilded.
The Memorial was constructed in 1922 by a local builder at a cost of £400. It was erected on the suggestion of Rev Sinclair Moore, and dedicated on 6th May 1922 by Major General Sir Charles Townsend who became MP for Wrekin in 1919. He led an Indian Army Division to capture Bagdhad from the Turks, during the war he was captured and spent the rest of the war as a prisoner.
