Irish Regiments Chapel after works © St Ann's Gate 2015Irish Regiments Chapel war memorial is located within St Patrick’s Chapel in Westminster Cathedral, Francis Street, London. The memorial consists of 16 badges for Irish Regiments on enamelled plaques within gilded wreaths, below each is a brass plate with the name of the regiment, in an arcade beneath the St Patrick’s Chapel windows. The memorial commemorates the Irish soldiers who died in the First World War. Westminster Cathedral is Grade I listed and located within the Westminster Cathedral Conservation Area.

In 2016 a grant of £730 was awarded through the War Memorials Trust Grant Scheme towards cleaning and re-pointing with lime based mortar the Carrara frames, cleaning brass name plates to improve the legibility of the inscriptions and microcrystalline wax coating to protect the brass, cleaning of the metal frames of the enamel roundels and a contribution to professional fees. The memorial was also protected with SmartWater.

The memorial and the scheme of decoration for St Patrick’s Chapel was designed by John Marshall, the architect in charge of the Cathedral at the time. The Irish Regiments Chapel memorial was installed in its current position in 1923-4. The Irish Regiments Chapel before works © WMT 2015Roll of Honour Cabinet was installed at the same time in its current position, a niche beside the altar.
