The memorial consists of a freestanding box-ground bath stone obelisk surmounted by a Forest of Dean stone cross, and is inscribed with the names of those who lived in the village and served in the First World War (separately naming those who died, were reported missing, wounded and served but survived) with an inscription was added to the east elevation after the Second World War and later conflicts.
The memorial is situated on the Village Green in Sutton Courtenay Conservation Area, and near the western boundary wall of Sutton Courtenay All Saints’ Church.
In 2014 a grant of £5,710 was offered for repair and conservation work. The stonework had become soiled and damaged whilst the lettering was quite ineligible in parts. To address these issues the memorial was lightly cleaned using non-metallic bristle brushes and water. Open joints were repointed using a lime mortar and damaged stonework was repaired. The lettering on the memorial was deepened, sharpened where required. In addition, the concrete slabs at the base of the war memorial were lifted, cleaned and re-laid.
This war memorial was erected c.1920 with a dedication service held on 22nd May1920 and unveiled by Lord HH Asquith.
The decision to erect a War Memorial was made at a parish meeting held immediately after the signing of the Armistice in 1918. A committee was appointed consisting of the Vicar and Colonel H E Lindsay of the Manor House (located just south-west of The Green) and several other village residents. The memorial was designed by Colonel Lindsay and tenders for the stonework/sculptor were invited. The committee accepted the tender of Mr H R Cooper of Milton who built the War Memorial to the committee’s satisfaction. The War Memorial was provided by public subscriptions. Iron railings were provided, the cost of which was defrayed by the then Chairman of the Parish council Mr. F W Turner. These railings are thought to have been removed during the Second World War as part of the War Effort.
