A war memorial stands on the site of the former Drill Hill on Stow Hill in Newport, Gwent. It remembers the fallen of the First Rifle Battalion, The Monmouthshire Regimen. A figurative sculpture stands in one corner of the site with a landscape feature of a poppy field flowering at certain times of the year. Along the walls of the site are plaques remembering the fallen at Ypres on 8th May 2915 when only 129 Officers and Men of 500 survived.
In 2015, War Memorials Trust Grants Scheme supported a repair and conservation project with a grant of £217 alongside an award from Cadw. The memorial joints were raked out by hand and re-pointed in lime mortar. In addition, the memorial plaques were steam cleaned and lettering re-gilded with 23.5 Carat gold leaf.
It is believed the memorial was erected around 1970.
