The memorial consists of a freestanding Latin stone cross on a two level stone plinth with a name tablet on the side of the upper level of the plinth
The memorial is located is the centre of the village of Cheriton, at the village green nearby the River Itchen.
In 2014 a grant of £1837 was offered for repair and conservation work. The stonework had become soiled and damaged whilst the lettering was quite ineligible in parts. To address these issues the memorial was lightly cleaned using non-metallic bristle brushes and water. Open joints were repointed using a lime mortar and damaged stonework was repaired. The lettering on the memorial was deepened, sharpened where required and repainted with oil-based paint.
This war memorial was erected c.1920 with a dedication service held on 17th October 1920. The inscription reads:
1914-1919/ FOR ENGLAND/ (NAMES)/ FAITHFUL UNTO DEATH O VALIENT HEARTS WHO TO YOUR GLORY CAME/ THROUGH DUST OF CONFLICT AND THROUGH BATTLE-FLAME/ TRANQUIL YOU LIE YOUR KNIGHTLY VIRTUE PROVED/ YOUR MEMORY HALLOWED IN THE LAND YOU LOVED/ SPLENDID YOU PASSED, THE GREAT SURRENDER MADE/ INTO THE LIGHT THAT NEVERMORE SHALL FADE/ DEEP YOUR CONTENTMENT IN THAT BLEST ABODE/ WHO WAIT THE LAST CLEAR TRUMPET CALL OF GOD 1939-1945/ FOR ENGLAND/ (NAMES)/ FAITHFUL INTO DEATH
