The memorial consists of a sandstone freestanding panel which has been designed with Grecian inspired elements; including two palm leaves to either side of the inscription panel and the design of a Greek pattern on the cornices of the flanking walls. The memorial is located at the junction of Great Western Road and Colebrook Street, Glasgow
In 2014 a grant of £10,210 was offered for repair and conservation work. Inappropriate cleaning in the past, along with soiling and the pealing of the existing gilding on the inscription, meant that the inscription become difficult to read. In addition, the joints on the memorial were cracking or missing which is letting water into the memorial. The water was then
causing damage to the surrounding stonework. To address the issues the memorial was appropriately cleaned and the incised lettering re-gild. A lime mortar was used to re-point the joints on the memorial and the surrounding hard landscaping. Stone repairs were also undertaken.
The memorial was unveiled by Sir Robert Mackenzie on Armistice Day in 1924. It was designed by A N Paterson, an Academical, and incorporated the statement that the Academy was a, ‘living and enduring memorial to the former members of the school who served in the war of 1914-1918 … in the confident hope that the memory of their sacrifices will be an inspiration to all who come after.’ In order to give the Memorial a fitting setting, the existing fence was replaced by a wall, and trees were planted. This memorial is one of three which are on display at the school.
The main inscription on the memorial reads:
“The Glasgow Academy
founded in 1845
reconstituted in 1925
by the
Glasgow Academicals War Memorial Trust
as a
living and enduring memorial
of those former members of the school
who served in the war of 1914-1918
and in the confident hope that the memory of
their sacrifices
will be an inspiration to all who come after”
