Chatteris war memorial is located at St Peter and St Paul’s churchyard, Market Hill, Chatteris, Cambridgeshire. The cross is constructed of Clipsham stone, on a tall pillar made from Hopton Wood stone. The memorial is adorned with carvings of St George, St Michael, The Vine and The Rose. It is framed by a semi-circular low level wall. The memorial commemorates the missing and killed residents of Chatteris from World War I and World War II on incised and black painted inscriptions. It is located within the Chatteris Town Conservation Area.
In 2013 a grant of £828 was awarded through the Small Grants Scheme towards steam cleaning, lime mortar pointing and stone repairs to improve legibility and repair broken stones. The project was completed and paid in 2015 when due to decreased costs the grant paid was reduced to £720. As Grant Offers are made based on quotes and estimates costs can reduce if, for example cleaning undertake initially reveals legible inscriptions which do not need re-cutting as was originally included in a quote.
The memorial was designed by Architect Mr Weatharlay, sculpted by Messrs A Robinson & Son, and built by Messrs Streather and Winn. The memorial was unveiled in 1920 by The Lord Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire (& The Isle of Ely). The memorial was paid for by Public Subscription and cost £1,700.
