The category B listed memorial consists of three main elements; in the centre is a carved stone column with base plinth mounted with a bronze commemorative plaque. Surmounted this column is a Corinthian capital and bronze figure. Flanking the column on either size is a curved wall with two small bronze plaques. Wrought ironwork railings close of the area in front of the memorial and are fixed to the stone piers either end of the
curved wall. The memorial is located outside the former Miner's Welfare Institute, Main Street, Ormiston.
In 2014 a grant of £8,220 was offered for repair and conservation work. Exposure to weather and pollution had resulted in a build-up of dirt and biological growth on the stone as well as corrosion of the bronze elements. Areas of the stonework had also been damaged or had been subject to deterioration. A considerable number of the joints had either cracked or missing mortar which was allowing water to get into the memorial resulting in damage to the stone. In addition the paint finish to the ironwork railings had deteriorated and this had caused corrosion. To address these issues appropriate cleaning of the stone and bronze elements of the memorial was undertaken. Stonework repairs were also undertaken and the joints were re-pointed with a lime mortar. The ironwork railings and gate were cleaned; corrosion and defective paint was been removed, before the ironwork is repainted.
Erected in 1925 the memorial was designed by Finandra Bose, an Indian sculptor born in 1888 who came to live and work in Scotland.
The main commemorative inscription on the memorial reads:
“In honour and everlasting
memory of the men of
the parishes of Ormiston
who gave their lives for
God and country in the
Great War 1914-1919”
