In 2014 War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £29,853 for repair and conservation works. The memorial has previously been repointed with cement which was cracking and coming loose, Stirling war memorial after work © Stirling City Heritage Trust, 2015this was allowing water to get into the memorial. The bronze elements of the memorial were in ‘Poor’ condition due to scratches, graffiti and evidence of corrosion. In addition, the retaining wall around the memorial had been damaged due to past structural movement and there was also a missing stone finial.

To address these issues the defective cement mortar was removed and re-pointing was undertaken with a lime based mortar. The bronze elements were repaired, cleaned and treated with a protective wax, and stone repairs where undertaken were damage had occurred due to structural movement. Lastly the like for like replacement of missing bronze, cast iron and stone elements were reinstated. On completion of the project, the total costs were less than estimated as such the final grant award was reduced to £26,782.

Stirling war memorial was designed by George R Davidson, who won the memorial design competition with his proposal titled ‘Pro Memoria’. The memorial was officially unveiled at a grand ceremony on Saturday 14 October 1922. Mr John Greig CBE, on behalf of the subscribers, handed it over to Provost McCulloch.

The main commemorative inscription in stone relief reads:

"In proud and
grateful
memory of
the men of
Stirling who
gave their lives
in the War
1914-18"

"At the going down
of the sun and in
the morning we will
remember them"
