Whitburn war memorial is located outside the Community Centre on Manse Road and takes the form of a sculpture. The memorial is composed of a roughhewn three stepped base and plinth surmounted by a stepped base and sculpture of a standing soldier with his hands resting on a rifle and his head bowed. There are plaques embedded in the plinth bearing the First World War inscription and a further slanted plaque on the steps bearing the names of the Second World War veterans.
In 2012 War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £7,238 towards the conservation of this memorial. The joints had suffered from frost damage and open and loose joints were re-pointed. There was biological growth and surface dirt on the surface of the stonework and the soldier figure was covered in algae, therefore the memorial was cleaned using a steam cleaning system and natural bristle brushes. The painted lettering had suffered a loss of legibility and was re-painted using black enamel paint. Some letters were damaged, or missing, and these were repaired or replaced accordingly. In addition missing elements of the stone, including the tip of the soldier’s nose, were re-modelled to match the original.
Whitburn war memorial was unveiled on 16th October 1921 by General Sir Francis Davies. The inscription on the memorial reads:
“1914 1919
To the glory of God
and in memory of the men
from Whitburn and district
who fell in the Great War
(names)
“Their name liveth for evermore””
“1939 1945
To the glorious memory
of the men
who fell in the Second World War
(names)”
