Weeden war memorial is located at Wesleyan Chapel on Abbotts Road and takes the form of a cross. The memorial is composed of a three-stepped Limestone base, plinth, tapering shaft and Maltese cross. The inscriptions are incised in the base and plinth, and there are further inscriptions on plaques fixed to the plinth. Weeden war memorial is dedicated to the fallen of the First and Second World Wars. The memorial is in a conservation area.
In 2014 War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £630 towards the conservation of this memorial. The memorial was cleaned using non-metallic bristle brushes and water to remove the vegetative growth, open joints were re-pointed using a non-cementitious lime mortar and the damaged area of stone was repaired using matching stone, pieced in and joined using non-cementitious lime mortar. Where required, some letters were sharpened up using hand tools and the plaques were cleaned with water, sponges and non-metallic brushes and sealed with microcrystalline wax.
Weeden war memorial was built by Newman & Haper, monumental masons of Aylesbury and dedicated on Thursday 5th May 1921. The inscription on the memorial reads:
“To the glory of God
& in memory of those
who laid down their lives
in the Great War 1914-1918
(names)
Second World War
1939-1945
(names)”
