Davenham war memorial is located at the junction of London Road and Hartford road and takes the form of a cross. The memorial is composed of a base, plinth, shaft and cross and is surrounded by fencing. There is a sword relief on the shaft and ornate detail at the base of the shaft and on the cross. The inscriptions are incised in the plinth and the base and commemorate the fallen of the First and Second World Wars.
In 2014 War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £1,080 towards the conservation of this memorial. The inscriptions were losing legibility so the memorial was cleaned using non-metallic bristle brushes and a steam cleaning system. Additional works included; the removal of loose and defective mortar using hand tools and re-pointing using a sand cement mortar mix on the concrete base and a non-cementitious lime mortar colour matched to the stone of the memorial, plastic repair to the stone base using a non-cementitious lime mortar and re-painting the lettering using a black enamel paint.
Davenham war memorial was designed by Mr C.E. Deacon of Liverpool ad erected by Messer’s Earp, Hobbs and Miller from Manchester. The memorial was unveiled on Saturday 25th June 1921 by Captain W.H. France-Hayhurst of Bostock Hall and the inscription reads:
“1914
1918
In proud and grateful
memory of the men of the
parish of Davenham
(names)
1939 In grateful memory of 1945
those who made the supreme sacrifice
(names)"
