Glasgow School of Art war memorial before work © GSA, 2014The war memorial consists of a roll of honour which is made up of three panels. The painted and gold leaf illuminated manuscript is surrounded by a timber and copper frame. The war memorial was originally installed within the Glasgow School of Art Mackintosh Building however is being temporarily displayed in the basement of Glasgow School of Art Reid Building.

Glasgow School of Art war memorial © GSA, 2015 In 2014 War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £1,140 for repair and conservation work. Following the award of a grant offer there was a concern about the memorial following the fire which broke out at the Mackintosh Building. However it was soon confirmed that although the memorial had been in the building at the time of the fire no damage had occurred and that the original planned Glasgow School of Art war memorial in new location © GSA, 2015 conservation work would be undertaken without the need for additional work.  The hinges of the timber and brass frame containing the roll of honour were stuck in position and it is no longer possible to close the two outer leaves of the frame. Inside the frame the parchment had noticeable areas of discolouration and a small split has been identified. To address these issues works to stabilise the split in the parchment and to address the discolouration of the issues causing it were undertaken. Following the completion of the conservation works the parchment was put back into the repaired frame. Details of the works were reported by the BBC news and can be accessed on their website.

The Roll of Honour was commissioned and funded by the Glasgow School of Art (GSA). The designer of the Roll of Honour was a former GSA student, Dorothy Doddrell and was completed and unveiled in 1925.
