Consett war memorial cross after works © Durham County Council, 2015The Grade II Listed war memorial to the Men of Consett is in the form of a wheel cross upon a tall and slender octagonal column, which in turn rests upon on a plinth which has a wreath raised in half relief on two of the four sides. Below this is a stepped pedestal. The memorial records the names of 301 men of Consett who fell in the Great War, 175 men who fell in the Second World War and a single soldier of the Korean War.

In 2014 a grant application to the Grants for War Memorials scheme was received for repair works to this memorial. Most notably one of the stone panels on the base with names was badly cracked. A grant of £4,417 was offeredConsett war memorial cross before works © Durham County Council, 2014 against a project cost of £5,890 to replace this damaged stone, clean the war memorial and re-point the joints. On completion of the project the total costs had reduced to £5,445 as such the final grant award was £4,083.
The memorial was unveiled and dedicated at a service on September 30th 1925. It was originally sited at Ainsley Terrace, Consett and was moved to its present location in the mid twentieth century.
