Great Sankey and Penketh war memorial after grant works © Rebecca Patton 2014Great Sankey and Penketh war memorial is located in St Mary’s Churchyard and takes the form of a wheel cross. The memorial is composed of an octagonal base surmounted by a plinth, shaft and wheel cross. The inscriptions are on bronze plaques attached to the plinth and commemorate the fallen of the First World War, Second World War and later conflicts. The memorial is Grade II listed.

In 2014 War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £1,588 towards the careful removal of the existing Second World War plaque and the creation of a new plaque to match the design and font of the First World War plaque, replicating the names and dedication on the discarded Second World War plaque. The replacement Second World War plaque was fixed using non-ferrous fixing. The memorial was rededicated on Sunday 5th October 2014.

Great Sankey and Penketh war memorial before grant works © Warrington Borough Council 2013 Earlier in 2014 War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £1,933 towards the restoration of the war memorial. A structural survey had previously been undertaken and illustrated that the condition of the memorial was deteriorating due to weathering. The works included; careful removal of the broken collar to the shaft and insertion of a stainless steel pin and re-building the collar using concrete to match original, removal of any evidence of rust from exposed areas, steam cleaning of the memorial using a low pressure setting to remove all algae and biological growth, temporary removal of Second World War plaque to remove rotten timber packing to the rear of the plaque, cutting back defective concrete around cracks and spalls of the shaft back to sound material, removal of evidence of corrosion from the ferrous fixing and re-enforcing with non-ferrous fittings, repairing the shaft using sand cement and mortar to match the original, re-pointing, and repairs to the dwarf wall to restore original profile and design. The grant was reduced because additional works were undertaken without prior agreement from War Memorials Trust, this was the rusticated effect added to sections of the plinth and base.
