The war memorial consists of a freestanding of a curved entrance gateway which leads to a small enclosed garden at a road, opposite the parish church. The gateway is constructed from red and cream coloured sandstone with iron gates and bronze plaques.
In 2014 War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £13,470 for repair and conservation work. The joints on the memorial were either completely lacking of mortar or the existing mortar has become cracked, this was allowing water ingress into the wall which was causing damage to the stone. To address this issue defective pointing was removed and re-pointed with a lime mortar. In addition the damaged stone step was repaired and the memorial was cleaned.
The Tayport war memorial was designed by Mr J Donald Mills FRIBA of Mills and Shepherd, architects in Dundee, and was erected in 1920. In 2010 the original bronze gates (which were later replaced with the current iron gates) were stolen from the memorial and sadly never recovered.
