Elderslie war memorial © Renfrewshire Council, 2014The war memorial consists of a central polished granite plaque which has been incised with commemorative inscription. The main plaque is supported by the cemeteries perimeter rubble wall; this had been clad with granite to either side. Three metal sculptures have been incorporated into the memorial design. Those flanking the plaque are contemporary and abstracted in nature while the mounted on the plaque depicts a plane, anchor, Elderslie war memorial © Renfrewshire Council, 2014bayonet and laurel branch.

In 2013 War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £6,005 for repair and conservation work. The memorial had loose and cracked cladding panel s, poor historic repair work and faded inscriptions which are hard to read. Water was getting into the memorial as there were areas where the existing mortar is cracked or missing. To address these issues the existing Elderslie war memorial © Renfrewshire Council, 2014defective mortar joints were removed and re-pointing works was undertaken using a lime mortar. Work also included repairs to the cracked cladding panels, re-fixing of loose panels, replacement of badly damaged stonework and the re-painting of the memorial inscription.

The initial plans for the memorial were drawn up in spring 1974. Peter McConnell Ltd (builders) was the appointed contractor to undertake the work. The metal sculptures were designed by an architect. The total cost of the project was in excess of £12,000. Following completion the memorial was dedicated on Sunday 14th June 1974. Four local minsters were in attendance together with a detachment of the Royal British Legion and Johnston Sliver Band.

The inscription on the memorial reads:

To the glory of God
and the memory of
the men and women of
Elderslie and district
who gave their lives
1914-18 1939-45
