The category C listed war memorial consists of a freestanding Celtic cross with carved sword and laurel wreath detailing on the front face. This surmounts a square plinth with carved burgh arms and incised dedication and First World War roll of honour, raised on a three stepped base. The memorial cross is placed within walled enclosure at the road side within an inset stone tablets containing a Second War World roll of honour.
In 2014 War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £3,600 for restoration works which saw the reinstatement of railings at the memorial. The original decorative railings were removed and replaced post 1945 by a stone built enclosure which enabled names to be added commemorating those who lost their lives in the Second World War, however at this time the replacement of the original railings was not undertaken as part of the project. To address this and as part of a larger conservation project, which saw the repair of the crumbling walls, replacement railings, which were sympathetic to the originals, were reinstated to recreate the original feel of enclosure around the memorial and reflect aspect of the original design intension of the memorials designer.
The inscription on the plinth of the memorial reads:
“To the
glory of God
and in honoured
memory of the men
who laided down their
lives for their country
in the Great Wars”
