The Potter Street memorial in Harlow is in the form of a limestone wheel cross on a large square limestone plinth. The plinth is inscribed with the names of the fallen. The memorial was originally designed to commemorate World War I with two names being added after World War II. There are railings surrounding the memorial and it was constructer by J Day and Sons of Bishops Stortford.
In 2013 an application to the Grants for War Memorials Scheme was received. The project was to clean the memorial and replace the wheel cross. It appeared that the wheel cross had been inappropriately treated in the past and was exhibiting severe cracking and delamination. A grant towards these works of £5,118 was offered.
The memorial was cleaned using water, pH neutral soap and natural bristle brushes. The replacement cross was made from limestone and the detailing reflected that of the original so as to ensure that the appearance of the memorial was not altered. The new cross was fixed using stainless steel dowels to ensure that it is securely anchored to the plinth. There had been some concern over the condition of the inscriptions, however following the cleaning of the memorial the legibility of these was greatly improved, as such no further works to these were required.
