Sutton in Ashfield war memorial © Ashfield DC, 2011This war memorial consists of a stone carved soldier standing with his head bowed, rifle in hand with the butt resting on the plinth. He stands atop a tapering plinth which includes black painted inscriptions of the names of men of Sutton in Ashfield who lost their lives in World War I. A stone tablet has been added to the base of the plinth with the names of those who lost their lives during World War II. The memorial is surrounded by stone Sutton in Ashfield war memorial © Ashfield DC, 2011bollards, three of which are embellished with a lead anchor on the front face.

In 2013 War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £1,617 towards repairs to the war memorial. This included restoration of the soldier’s rifle and bayonet in white Carrara marble to match the original, which was replicated using historic photos. The stone bollards surrounding the memorial were refurbished by the replacement of the lead outline of the anchor, where it was missing.

In 2019 this war memorial received a further grant of £1,230 from War Memorials Trust towards conservation works. Missing lettering was repaired to reinstate the original design. The construction joints of the memorial and surrounding paving were raked out and repointed using a lime mortar.

The war memorial was built by the Gregory Quarries and was dedicated on Sunday October 16th 1921.Sutton in Ashfield war memorial © Ashfield DC, 2014
