This memorial consists of three bronze statues set on tapering granite plinths and with two tiered
Steps. On the top step are the words “Non sibi sed patriae” carved in relief, which translates “Not for himself but for his Country.” A dedication and the names of the fallen from Llandaff is inscribed into each column and enamelled in gold.
In 2013 War Memorials trust offered a grant of £2,309 towards repair and conservation of the war memorial. The bronze statues were previously treated with a black patination which had weathered and there were many areas of verdi gris visible. There was also evidence that enamel paint had been applied to the bronze statues in the past in an attempt to cover exposed areas and this was causing damage to the statues. For this reason, the memorial and the statues were cleaned using distilled water, non-metallic bristle brushes and a pH neutral soap. The remnants of enamel paint was removed from the statues using white spirits and the bronze was then rinsed again using clean water and non-metallic bristle brushes. The statues were then carefully patinated and waxed for protection. The ferrous staining on the stone was treated with a clay poultice then the lettering was re-guilded where necessary using a gold enamel.
The memorial was constructed in 1924 by W. Goscombe John RA, sculptor and the plinths were designed by J P Grant.
The inscription reads:
Llandaff Remembers
Her own sons
and those of
The Cathedral School
who gave their lives
in the Great War
and in the Second
World War
