This war memorial consists of a Latin cross with elaborate carvings on the head and shaft on the tapering plinth. The plinth has plaques with lettering in relief holding the names and dedications to the men of Shaftesbury who lost their lives fighting in World War I and World War II.
In 2013 War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £925, paid in 2014, towards cleaning of the war memorial using a low pressure steam cleaner and re-pointing of open joints using a lime mortar.
The war memorial was unveiled by Lord Shaftesbury in memory of the sixty men who lost their lives during World War I. It is a replica of the oldest cross in England, the Eyam Cross and has been positioned to provide unbroken views over the vale; some of the surrounding trees were cut down in order to facilitate this. The memorial cost approximately £500 and was paid for through public subscription.
The inscription reads:
Lest we forget
in proud and grateful memory
of the men of Shaftesbury
who gave their lives
in the Great War
1914-1919
Remembering also those who
made the supreme sacrifice
1939-1945
