This war memorial consists of an elaborate Eleanor Cross standing on octagonal plinth and octagonal Gothic style central tower and is framed by an octagonal dwarf wall. The memorial is located in the town centre of Sandbach and is constructed of Portland stone. It is dedicated to the men of Sandbach who died whilst serving in World War I. The names of those who lost their lives fighting in World War II were later added to the memorial.
In 2013 War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £2,212 towards conservation of the memorial. This included cleaning using a DOFF style low pressure steam cleaning system, re-painting of the lettering using a black enamel paint and raking out the joints using hand tools and re-pointing using a colour-matched lime mortar.
The site for the memorial was chosen by a subcommittee who approved the design and the site on Monday 22nd August 1921. The memorial was unveiled on 16th April 1922 at a ceremony that was presided over by local clergy and dignitaries. It was paid for by public subscription at a cost of £856 and the cost of the site was £900. The memorial was designed and built by Messrs Clegg and Sons of Chester.
