Whitgift memorial cross before showing cracking © S Parry 2013The Whitgift war memorial is located within the churchyard of the Grade I listed St Mary Magdalene church. It is in the form of stone Latin cross on a hexagonal base. The memorial is 13 feet high with incised painted lettering.

In 2013 a grant of £2575 was offered through the Grants for War Memorials Scheme for works to remove the internal corroded iron dowels from the structure, by dismantling part of the war memorial, and replacing these with stainless steel dowels. The corroded iron fixings had caused the decorative head of the cross to crack through expansion. The cracks were too severe for repair, as such the decision was made to replace the cross head on a like-for-like basis. Upon completion the costs of the project had reduced, as such the final grant payment was for £2520.

It was dedicated for the Ecclesiastical Parish of Whitgift, Ousefleet and Reedness. The memorial was designed by Tyas & Guest of Swinton and it was unveiled in 1921 by the Vicar of Whitgift, Rev. J. Herring and dedicated by Right Rev. Bishop Iliff, Vicar of Goole. Newspaper reports at the time estimated that approximately 2000 people attended the service.
