This war memorial consists of a sandstone plaque of a classic design with a pedimented section. The memorial is located on an external wall of Didsbury National and Elm Grove School and is dedicated to the men of the school who served in World War I.
In 2013 War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £775 towards repairs to the memorial. This included cleaning using an alkaline solution and natural bristle brush to remove the pollution crust, this was then neutralised with a mild hydrochloric acid solution and clean water. The missing fragments and cracks in the surface of the memorial were filled using a “plastic repair” method coloured with earth pigments. Re-pointing around the memorial was undertaken using a lime mortar and finally the letters were re-painted using a black oil-based paint as per the original design.
The memorial was unveiled on Armistice Day 1920. The Architect of the memorial is believed to be Ernest Woodhouse of Manchester.
The inscription on the memorial reads:
1914 1919
Didsbury National and Elm Grove School
“How sleep the brave!
Who sink to rest
By all their Country’s wishes blest”
