Skelton-on-Ure war memorial consists of a clock with accompanying slate plaques in limestone surrounds either side of the porch used to enter the village hall, formerly the Reading Room. The plaques explain that the clock was established as the war memorial. The village hall is on Main Street in the village.
In 2011 War Memorials Trust gave a grant of £1,117 towards conservation works to the plaques. The slate plaques had eroded and the names were no longer legible. It was therefore necessary for the plaques to be cut out using hand tools and replaced with new black slate panels upon which new inscriptions and names had been cut to match the original design. The plaques were attached using stainless steel fixings and lime mortar. It was recognised that the stone frames around the slate may have disintegrated during removal of the slate but fortunately this did not happen as the use of hand tools minimised the potential damage; this has retained some of the historic appearance of the memorial.
The memorial was dedicated on 8th October 1919. The memorial plaques were installed by H.A Green and Sons.
The plaque reads:
“The clock in this
building was erected
by public subscription
to place on record
the services of the
following men associ
ated with the parish
in the Great War
1914 – 1918”
A list of names follows the inscription on the left hand plaque continuing on the plaque on the right hand side.
