Loose war memorial is located in All Saints’ Churchyard on Church Street in Kent. The war memorial consists of a Portland stone cross and bronze sword on a square pedestal, which stands on a two stepped Portland stone base. The square pedestal contains Aberdeen granite panels which are inscribed with the names of the 41 men from Loose who lost their lives during the First World War. At the base of the pedestal are two stones which are inscribed with the names of the men who lost their lives during the Second World War. The memorial is located within Loose conservation area.
In 2011, War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £750 through the Small Grants Scheme for the addition of a granite tablet at the base of the memorial to add the names of four men who lost their lives in warfare. In order to match the existing tablet on the memorial, Cornish Grey granite was chosen as the most appropriate stone. A new tablet was produced with raised black lead lettering and carefully fitted to the reverse of the memorial using hand cutting and lime mortar. Smartwater was then applied to all metal elements of the war memorial. A faculty was required for the works as the memorial is located within a Churchyard.
Loose war memorial was unveiled in July 1922 by Private Harold Harris who had served in Flanders with the East Kent Regiment and had suffered the loss of his sight during the First World War. Following special training at St Dunstan’s Hostel, Harris had been able to set up a boot repairer’s business in the village. The memorial itself was designed by A W Smith FRIBA and the work was carried out by H Cole of Broughton Monchelsea.
All four sides of the plinth are inscribed with the names of those who lost their lives during the First World War as well as the following dedication:
“To the
Glory of God
and
in grateful memory
of the
Men of Loose
who gave their lives for their country in
The Great War
1914- 1918”
