Poynton war memorial is located in St George’s churchyard at the junction of the A5149 and A523. It is a tall stone Latin cross which stands on a plinth and a three-stepped base. The plinth carries inscriptions and 33 names from the First World War with additional plaques set on the steps carrying inscriptions and 31 names to commemorate those killed in the Second World War.
In 2012 a grant of £2,037 from War Memorials Trust supported conservation works to the memorial. Ferrous fixings were removed and replaced with stainless steel to avoid expansion and rusting which could impact upon the structure. The stones on the step were re-aligned and re-bedded with lime mortar and the joints were re-pointed. The memorial was cleaned using DOFF steam cleaning and paint was removed from the existing lead lettering. A name was also added to the memorial in the same design, style, font and original material as the existing names, as well as the reinstatement of one letter.
The memorial cross was built on the site of an old bell-cote in 1920 and was unveiled by Lord Vernon. On the plinth, the inscriptions are dedicated to those who lost their lives during World War I. This reads:
“To give glory to God
for the memory of the
men of Poynton
who laid down their lives
for the cause of humanity
in the Great War
1914-19”
The names of those who lost their lives are inscribed on the sides of the plinth, and around the base are the following inscriptions:
“Erected by the people of Poynton
Greater love hath no man than this
Their name liveth for evermore
Whosoever shall lose his life for my sake shall find it.”
At the base of the cross are four stones dedicated to those who lost their lives during the Second World War. This reads:
“In memory of those of Poynton
Who laid down their lives in the
Great War
1939-1945
They shall grow not old,
as we that are left grow old:
age shall not weary them,
nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun
and in the morning
we shall remember them.”
