This war memorial consists of a sandstone calvary cross with a metal figure of Christ surmounting a round shaft on top of a square plinth. The memorial stands in the grounds of St Chad's Church, Nantwich. The memorial has received multiple grants and the summary details of this record relate to the most recent grant.
In 2011, War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £811 towards the repair of the memorial. In the past the memorial was damaged and repaired with inappropriate materials; these were now loose and making the cross unstable so the project was for general conservation of the memorial and to address the previous inappropriate repairs.
The cross and shaft were dismantled with the base remaining in place and appropriately protected to ensure water was not allowed to enter through the open joint for the shaft. The inappropriate mortar and fixings were removed from the memorial and it was lightly cleaned with low pressure water, non-ionic detergent and non-metallic brushes. Following this, friable surfaces and fractures were consolidated with epoxy resin; cracks were grouted with lime mortar and broken sections were repaired with stainless steel dowels set in epoxy resin. The cross was re-fixed to the base with stainless steel dowels and lime mortar to match the colour of the stone.
In 2013 War Memorials Trust offered £1,085 towards the addition of a hardstanding area around the memorial to improve access for services.
The memorial was dedicated on 15th February 1921 and was unveiled by The Bishop of Chester.
