This war memorial consists of a wheel cross atop of a rectangular gabled plinth and a two stepped base. The memorial is located in the grounds of St Edmunds Church, Wootton, Isle of Wight, and it records the names of the men from the District who fell during World War I and World War II.
In 2012, War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £642 towards repair works to the memorial and the surrounding hard standing. This included cleaning of the memorial using water, non-metallic bristle brushes and wooden spatulas to remove organic growths. This was undertaken over 3 days to reduce saturation of the stone and to improve the end results. The letters were then sharpened by hand, where required then an additional name was added to the memorial in a font to match the existing inscriptions. As part of this scheme, the paving was lifted and taken to the contractors’ workshop to be cleaned. New foundations were laid to bed and re-lay the paving.
The memorial was originally located by the South door of St Edmunds Church, Wootton and was unveiled on Remembrance Day 1935 by Brigadier General Leverson Gower. The memorial was re-located to its current location within the graveyard of the church in 1948 and at the same time, the names of the fallen from World War II were added to the plinth. The memorial was unveiled in its new location on Sunday 14th November 1948 by Major General the Lord Ruthven and was re-dedicated by the Bishop of Portsmouth.
It was designed by architect John Harry Fulford.
