Ripley war memorial is located in the village market square. It is a sandstone column which tapers at the crown and rises from an octagonal base which rests on a three-stepped square base. On opposite faces of the column are bronze plaques, both of which bear a sunburst motif and inscriptions; one relating the World War I, the other to World War II. The memorial includes the names of those who served and survived as well as those who died. The memorial is located within the Ripley village conservation area.
In 2011, a grant of £400 was offered through the Small Grants Scheme towards cleaning and treatment of the bronze to help improve legibility of the inscriptions as there was uneven corrosion. Corrosion was first cleaned from the bronze plaques and the bronze was then re-patinated with a solution of ferric nitrate. Trials of the cleaning method were undertaken prior to their use. Protective coatings of microcrystalline wax were then applied to the bronze. Protection of the stonework was assured at all times during the cleaning and treatment process.
The memorial is privately owned by the Ingilby family of Ripley Castle and their permission was obtained for the project.
