The memorial is located in the village cemetery situated to the east of Wellington by the A49. It is in the form of a cross pattée, atop a shaft that rises from a square block base; all of Cornish Granite in a rustic punched finish, with a dressed panel at the bottom of the front face of the shaft that bears the inscription. The front face of the base is also inscribed. The whole rests on a convex plinth of pitched granite boulders. The memorial only commemorates the First World War.
In 2010, a grant of £312 was offered through the Small Grants Scheme towards cleaning and re-lettering works as the inscriptions were very difficult to read. This involved the removal of moss and lichen deposits through gentle bushing with non-metallic brushes and low-pressure de-ionised water. Lettering was re-painted with black enamel.
The memorial was erected in the 1920s and was funded through public subscription.
The dressed panel on the shaft is inscribed:
“For King and
Country
1914 – 1918”
Beneath this are the names of sixteen people who fell during the First World War.
The front face of the base is inscribed “Wellington”.
