The Rotherham Grammar School Old Boys Association war memorial is in the style of a fifteenth century medieval cross and constructed of stone. The shaft surmounts an octagonal plinth and two steps, inscription panels are located on the plinth. The memorial is in the grounds of the Grade II listed school and located in a conservation area.
In 2009, War Memorials Trust gave a grant of £2,500 towards the relocation of the memorial. The memorial needed to be relocated from the corner of the Thomas Rotherham College field to a more central location covered by CCTV as the memorial had been vandalised and its metal inscription plaques had been stolen.
Prior to the dismantling of the memorial, a full photographic record was taken as well as during the works and in its new location. The memorial was carefully dismantled in sections and these were labelled to ensure that it could be rebuilt in the correct order. A concrete base was laid in the new location and the memorial was reconstructed; all pointing was undertaken in hydraulic lime mortar and all internal cramps and pins were non-ferrous. As part of the project new hard landscaping and steps were created around the memorial, but these elements were not subject to the grant. Listed Building Consent was required for the project.
The memorial was built as a result of a scheme which began in 1923 by the Old Boys’ Association for Rotherham Grammar School. The memorial was designed by an Old Boy Lieutenant Colonel Knight and built by another Old Boy, Mr Treherne. The memorial was unveiled by the Headmaster Rev. Hargreaves Heap on 19th February 1925 after a service at the Parish Church where the Archbishop of York conducted the Sermon. The choice of design of a fifteenth century cross for the memorial is associated with the time of the school’s creation. Plaques were later added for those killed in World War II and the Falkland’s.
The inscriptions on the memorial are:
“In honoured memory of the Old Boys of the School who fell in the Great War.
1914-1918”
“Who dies if England live.”
