This memorial is a stone cenotaph comprising tapering column atop a raised stone base with step access. A stone wreath and inscription plaque adorn the upper front face of the column. The column is buttressed with stone in a classical style at the base of each side fronted by a stone plinth upon which rests a bronze lion. The three faces of this plinth are inscribed with the names of those commemorated from the First World War. The names of those commemorated from the Second World War are inscribed on the rear face of the column. Stone flower pots are placed in the concave corners of the base. The memorial is located in front of the Town Hall and Library.
In 2010, a grant of £2,500 was offered through the Small Grants Scheme towards the addition of wrought iron railings to prevent the repeated vandalism of the memorial which had been taking place. There was also the addition of names which were originally omitted. The railings were set into the paving with the memorial fully enclosed and access via a single gate to the front. The two additional names were added in the same style as the existing.
The memorial was unveiled by Mr T Veevers JP in a ceremony held on 17th June 1921 and attended by approximately 12,000 people. The dedication was by Dr Henry Henn, the Lord Bishop of Burnley, who was accompanied by the Rev T. Smith, vicar of St Lukes in Brierfield.
The main inscription on the stone plaque below the stone wreath on the upper front face of the column reads:
“In memoriam
1914-1918
1939-1945”
