Blackmore war memorial following cleaning and re-lettering © Blackmore, Hook End & Wyatts Green Parish Council, 2010Blackmore war memorial is made of granite and is a Latin cross surmounting a hexagonal shaft which is on a hexagonal plinth and two-tiered hexagonal stepped base. The whole stands on a paved area with flower bed surrounds and enclosed to the rear and sides by granite bollards linked by chains. The plinth is inscribed on five faces; the rear face is blank. The front face of the upper base step is also inscribed. The memorial is located on the village green and commemorates those who served and who were killed during World War One.

The inscriptions were illegible due to weathering © Blackmore, Hook End & Wyatts Green Parish Council, 2009In 2009, a grant of £1,575 was offered through the Small Grants Scheme towards repair works. The lettering on the memorial had become illegible due to the weathering of the stone. The memorial was cleaned by low pressure water and non-metallic bristle brushes. The faces with inscriptions were refaced by the removal of a 2-3mm layer to produce smoother surfaces for re-inscribing the memorial as the original surface was not in a suitable condition for this. The re-cut lettering was then painted black.

The funds for the memorial were raised by a committee that was convened to oversee the memorial project. The memorial was constructed by Messrs Wray and Fuller. A ceremony was held on 7th November 1920 during which the memorial was unveiled by Lieutenant Colonel Gibbons DSO.The inscriptions are once again legible © Blackmore, Hook End & Wyatts Green Parish Council, 2010

The inscription on the front face of the upper base step reads:

“Their name liveth
for evermore”

The inscription above the names commemorated on the front face of the plinth reads:

“In memory of those who gave
their lives for their country
in the Great War 1914-1918”

An additional inscription reads:

“The following connected
with Blackmore
also served in His
Majesty’s forces”
