This limestone war memorial consists of a square plinth on top of a three-stepped base surmounted by a four sided shaft which is topped with a lantern cross. There is a wreath in relief on the south face of the plinth and inscriptions on the other three sides of the plinth. The memorial is inscribed with the names of 17 village men killed in the First World War. A further 7 names were added on a separate stone following the Second World War. The memorial stands in the grounds of the deconsecrated St Mary's Elvetham Church which is located in the grounds of The Elvetham Hotel, Hampshire.
In 2012 War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £1776.00 for cleaning, repairs and works to the inscriptions. The memorial was cleaned using DOFF system and then the condition of the inscriptions was assessed in order to determine the extent of sharpening required. Following the assessment it was decided that the World War II inscriptions were largely illegible therefore much of this tablet needed re-cutting. Some of the lettering on the square plinth was deepened to improve legibility. The works to the lettering were undertaken using hand tools.
Patch repairs had been carried out to several of the memorial steps, and due to a differential erosion rate of the different stones there was entensive cracking and degradation which was found on inspection to be beyond repair. These stones were replaced with like-for-like stone and bedded using a lime mortar. The open joints of the memorial were re-pointed using a lime mortar.
The memorial was also treated using a biocide to remove all traces of biological growth which were obscuring the inscriptions.
The war memorial was unveiled on 22nd April 1922 by the Hon. Sir S Arthur Gough-Calthorpe who was the Commander-in-Chief, Portsmouth and the dedication was performed by the Bishop of Winchester. It was built by Mardles of Fleet.
