Stanley and Stanley Common war memorial after grant works © Peter Clarke, 2010The memorial is located on Station Road in the village of Stanley.  It consists of a granite obelisk on a granite pedestal.  The main shaft of the obelisk has polished panels on all faces, whilst the base section of the obelisk and the pedestal have a polished panel on the front face only.  The granite memorial sits on a two-stepped concrete base; on the front face of the top step is embedded a marble tablet.  The bottom of the polished panel on the front face of the obelisk shaft bears an engraved laurel wreath.  The front panel of the pedestal and the marble tablet also bear painted inscriptions dedicated to both World Wars.  The memorial is located within a conservation area.

The Trust gave a grant of £450 through the Small Grants Scheme towards cleaning of the memorial by steam cleaning, use of non-ionic detergent and clay poultices and application of an approved biocide and raking out defective joints and re-pointing with lime mortar.  Unfortunately the grant award finally paid by War Memorials Trust on completion of the project had to be reduced to only cover the re-pointing and cleaning work and exclude dressing back of the lower step and re-casting to match the existing to replace previous repairs and the replacement of missing lead lettering.  This is because work was undertaken to the lettering to change it from lead to incised lettering which could not be funded as it is not like-for-like replacement.  There was also concern from the applicant regarding the colour of the re-cast concrete step; as concrete is very difficult to match it is important that samples are provided before the work is undertaken so the best match can be chosen and so everyone has the same expectation for the final colour.  As the cleaning and re-pointing work was undertaken appropriately War Memorials Trust decided to support the project by still providing a grant towards these elements of work.

The front panel of the pedestal bears the inscription:

“To
the glory of God
and in grateful memory
of the men of this village
who gave their lives
in the Great War
1914 – 1919”

Following this are the names of six men commemorated, below which is inscribed:

“Heroes all, for us they died.”

The marble tablet is inscribed:

“World War 1939-1945”

Beneath this inscription are the names of the four men who were killed in this War.
