Earl Soham war memorial © Earl Soham Parish Council, 2010Earl Soham war memorial is a rough-hewn granite Latin cross on a three-stepped base. The memorial commemorates those killed in World Wars I and II, and the names are recorded on lead letters on recessed sections of the stone. The memorial is located within the grounds of St Mary’s Church, and is within a Conservation Area.

In 2010, War Memorials Trust gave a grant of £397 towards works to the lettering which included replacing missing lead letters which had been inappropriately repaired in the past; re-fixing any loose letters and re-painting the letters in black enamel. In a few cases it was not possible to re-cut the lettering due to the condition of the stone so the lettering was just re-painted without the lead. In addition, the memorial was cleaned with low pressure water and non-metallic brushes to assist the work to the lettering and remove some of the heavy deposits on the memorial. A biocide was also applied to address this. Any open joints were re-pointed with lime mortar.Lettering before the project © Earl Soham Parish Council, 2010

The memorial was unveiled on 18th July 1920.

The inscriptions on the memorial read:

“1914 – 1918
To the victorious dead.
