WM3538 Clare war memorial before © Clare Parish CouncilClare war memorial is an octagonal Celtic cross memorial, approx. 19ft high, and is constructed from Clipsham stone, which is a type of limestone. It is located in Market Place, Clare. The base of the memorial has flint detailing on all faces with the second, third and fourth tiers having inscribed and painted names of the fallen from World War I and II. On the four panels of the cross are carved the Arms of Clare, the Suffolk Regiment and those of St Edmund and St George.

WM3538 Clare war memorial after © Clare Parish Council 2011In 2010 an application was made to the Grants for War Memorials Scheme. A number of areas of the memorial had spalled and required indent repairs. This included areas of the flint inscriptions. Some repairs had previously been undertaken using inappropriate materials and therefore needed removing and renewing in lime mortar. In addition to these works the memorial was to be re-pointed using lime mortar and gently cleaned using water, a non metallic bristle brush and appropriate biocide. A grant of £2,945 was offered against a project cost of £5,897.

The memorial was built by Frederick J Lindley of Sudbury, Suffolk and was dedicated and unveiled 22nd October 1921.
