Lostwithiel Peace Memorial is located on Grenville Road in Lostwithiel and takes the form of a granite obelisk on a moulded plinth and single stepped base. The memorial is Grade II listed and located within a Conservation Area.
In 2011 War Memorials Trust gave a grant of £1,514 towards the installation of railings and granite kerbs around the memorial. This was required because due to the exposed location of the memorial at a road junction it had been hit and damaged numerous times by vehicles passing and parking against the memorial. Although Listed Building Consent was not required in this case, the local planning authority’s Conservation Officer was consulted on the proposals as the memorial is both listed and within a Conservation Area. The simple design and scale of the railings and use of granite for the kerbs ensures that this addition is sympathetic to the original design of the memorial and will not detract from it, but will hopefully ensure it does not receive further damage.
The memorial was designed and built by a local stonemason Joseph Nicholls who won an award for the design. The memorial was erected in November 1903 following the end of the Boer War and was built to commemorate the return of the men from St Winnow parish.
In February 2010 a plaque was added to the memorial which reads:
This Memorial was erected in 1903
In Gratitude to God for Peace
after the Boer War in S. Africa 1899-1902
and for the safe return
of the men of Saint Winnow Parish
Thomas Henry Maker William Charles Oliver
Frederick William Stephens John Wevell
