The Portland memorial is a twelve metre high Portland stone obelisk. It stands on Yeates Road, on the brow of an escarpment overlooking Portland harbour and Chesil beach. The obelisk is set on a plinth on a base. Laurel wreaths in half relief are carved at the bottom of all four sides of the obelisk against the moulding above the plinth. There is a World War I dedication on the front face of the obelisk, a World War II dedication on the front face of the base and names of the fallen on all four faces of the plinth and on the base. Wire mesh to contain wreaths surrounds the base of the memorial. The memorial is set within a square gravelled area surrounded by a low stone wall, and there is an additional turfed apron to the southern side, enclosed by a stone kerb.
In February 2008 War Memorials Trust gave £310 towards work to clean the memorial, apply biocide and re-paint the incised lettering. Two corner stones of the kerb surrounding the turfed apron also received attention; one was realigned and the other replaced.
The dedication on the front of the obelisk reads
In
memory
of our
glorious
dead
1914 - 1918
and the World War II dedication on the base reads
And of those who made the supreme sacrifice
in the Second World War 1939 – 1945
The memorial was unveiled at a ceremony on 11th November 1926 by an ex-serviceman called Pte Crispin.
