The memorial hall at King’s School is in a vernacular gothic style incorporating more vernacular elements such as pitched roof alongside more typical gothic-style features such as arched windows. The building is built predominantly of local ashlar stone and Doulting stone dressings (also from the south-west) with Westmorland slate. The memorial hall is dedicated to the 57 members of the school killed in World War I and the 60 that were killed in World War II. The hall is Grade II listed and located within a conservation area. This grant related specifically to the panelling located within the hall.
A large project was undertaken to undertake repairs to the building including plumbing, electrical works, window maintenance and redecorations. In 2010, War Memorials Trust gave a grant of £2,500 towards work to the dedicatory panelling within the hall. This included correcting errors which had been identified on the panels such as date of death and rank, repairing water stained areas and mouldings, splits in the wood were repaired with fillets or fillers and doors which could not close were repaired. Unfortunately, due to the extent of some of the corrections required, a number of panels had to be replaced where due to the condition of the reverse of the panels these could not be re-used. Although the hall is listed, Listed Building Consent was not required in this case as the works were like-for-like repair. It is important to consult the local planning authority on all projects regarding listed memorials to establish whether any consents are required; whether consent is required for certain types of work can vary between authorities.
The foundation stone for the hall was laid by the Lord Bishop of London in January 1919 and the opening ceremony was conducted in 1924. The architect for the building was A. J. Pictor FRIBA. The listing record for the memorial states that the design of the building is believed to have been based on Wadham College, Oxford as the school has links with the College.
