Coningsby war memorial © Kathy Roberts, 2010Coningsby war memorial is located on the High Street in the town. The memorial consists of an Aberdeen red granite column which is broken at an angle on the shaft; this surmounts three plinths which hold the lead letter inscriptions for the memorial and the whole sits on a Portland stone base.

In 2010, War Memorials Trust gave a grant of £62 towards the cleaning of the stone around the inscriptions with non-metallic brushes and de-ionised water.  This facilitated the re-painting of the lead letters in black enamel and for any loose letters to be re-secured to improve the legibility and security of the inscriptions.

The memorial was built in 1921 by Thomas Kent of Boston, Lincolnshire for £150. The memorial was dedicated in September 1921 by Rev. Henry Felix.

Inscriptions prior to re-painting © Kathy Roberts, 2010A plaque on the memorial reads:
“This memorial was erected in 1921
by public subscription. The design
of the broken column symbolises
a broken life and is a tribute to
all those men from this parish
who made the supreme sacrifice
for our freedom”

The inscriptions on the memorial read:

“This monument is erected by
the parishoners of Coningsby
in loving and grateful memory
of all whose names are recorded
