Wroughton war memorial after conservation works © Wroughton Parish Council, 2010Wroughton war memorial stands on the corner of Wharf Road at the entrance to the Ellendune Shopping Centre. The cross is constructed of Portland Stone. The small cross is at the top of a tall column above a plinth supported by five steps. On both plinth and steps are incised and painted names from World Wars I and II. The front of the memorial is approached by several steps up from the pavement.

In 2009, War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £900 towards cleaning the masonry with water and non-metallic bristle brushes, the hand cutting of one additional name, re-enamelling of the lettering in black where required and the raking out of defective joints by hand and re-pointing with lime mortar mix to match the existing in colour and texture.

The name of the soldier added is A. E. P. Rochester. He was shot down in 1943 but his name was mistakenly omitted from the memorial after the Second World War.Inscriptions prior to cleaning and re-painting © Wroughton Parish Council, 2009

The memorial was dedicated on 3rd August 1924. It was originally sited on an island on the main road between Swindon and Wroughton. However, in 1975 it was moved to its current location.Inscriptions after cleaning and re-painting and addition of name © Wroughton Parish Council, 2010
