Chipperfield cross © MJS Conservation, 2010This war memorial is made from red brick and limestone. The raised base is surmounted by stone clad stepped plinth leading up to a square brick column with stone pilasters. On top of the column is a stone cross on projecting moulded cornice.

It is located on The Common in Chipperfield, Hertfordshire.

The main issues with the memorial were that parts of the inscription were covered with heavy pollution deposits. The paint had also flaked off. There were also two areas of stone damage most likely caused by water freezing and thawing inside the structure. War Memorials Trust gave a grant of £1,465 towards the work which included cleaning, re-painting the lettering and applying a stone consolidant.

The memorial was unveiled on 3rd October 1920 by the parishioners and was re-dedicated in November 1948 by General Sir Frederick Pile. It was designed by C. E. Eden who was responsible for memorials in Nacton and East Bergolt. The original cost of the memorial was £250. It is Grade II listed.Chipperfield cross © MJS Conservation, 2010

The memorial is dedicated to those who fell in World War I and II. The inscription reads:

“Sons of this place let this be said
that you who live are worthy of your dead”
