The obelisk is located in the grounds of the Bowes Museum in Barnard Castle, County Durham.
War Memorials Trust gave a grant of £1,227 towards the memorial. The main works were the re-alignment of the lower steps; cleaning of the obelisk with water and bristle brushes; defective joints being raked out and re-pointed; re-blacking of the lead lettering.
The memorial was built by C. Parkin & Son of Crosby Ravensworth, Penrith. It was unveiled on 13th October 1923 by Rev. H.W. Bircham, vicar of Barnard Castle. The memorial is dedicated to those who fell in World War I and II and is listed Grade II.
The inscription reads:
Pro patria
1914-1919
In grateful remembrance of the men of
Barnard Castle
of all ranks who fell in the Great War
for God, King and right
they gave their all
