This war memorial is a limestone cenotaph with low flanking walls and is surrounded by plants and railings. The area is accessed by metal gates. On the memorial is a wreath with a crane in it which is the symbol for Cranleigh.
The memorial is located in the centre of the village on the High Street in Cranleigh, Surrey.
In 2009 War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £2,500 towards repairs to the memorial and the entrance gate. The main memorial, paving, and surrounding wall were re-pointed in hydraulic lime mortar to match the existing in colour, texture, and finish. Old mortar repairs using cement were replaced with lime mortar repairs. The wall on both sides of the gate were rebuilt with the retention of as much original stone as possible, and was repaired with stainless steel fixings and epoxy resin. This was required because the walls had displaced due to the weight and misuse of the gates. The gates were re-painted in black.
In 2014 War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £895 towards cleaning and re-pointing the war memorial. The memorial was steam cleaned and open joints were re-pointed using lime mortar which colour matched the original.
This memorial was designed by Frederick Hodgson of “Waterhouses”; the cost for the architect’s design was £74 and was paid for by Sir G. Chadwyck-Healy, a local resident. The memorial was built in 1920 to the cost of £864, by a local builder Thorpes. It was unveiled and dedicated on 5th December 1920 by Rev. Philip Cunningham. The memorial is dedicated to those killed in both World Wars.
