The Knockagh monument stands above the town of Greenisland overlooking Belfast Lough. It remembers the fallen of County Antrim from World Wars I and II.
In 2006 the memorial needed to be repaired, joints required re-pointing and major cleaning work was necessary. War Memorials Trust gave a grant of £1,500 to the project. This was its first grant to a conservation project on a war memorial in Northern Ireland.
The Knockagh monument is the County Antrim war memorial. In 1918 the High Sheriff of the County Henry Dupre Malkin Barton began the task of building the memorial. The foundation stone was laid on 7th October 1922. However on Mr Barton's death in 1934 his dream remained incomplete due to a lack of funding. It took until 1936 for public pressure to lead the then Antrim County Council to finish the war memorial.
The inscription on the memorial reads:
To the Glory of God
and in proud
and affectionate remembrance
of the men
of County Antrim
who fell in the Great War
This memorial
is erected by their grateful county
Nobly you fought your knightly virtue proved.
Your memory hallowed in the land you loved.
