The war memorial in the east Berkshire village of Bray, on the River Thames, is a Portland stone cross, whose arms widen at the end like a simplified Canterbury cross, on a slim pillar standing on a triple plinth and a two-stepped base. There is moulding at the top and the base of the pillar. The plinth consists of a shallow octagonal section on two square blocks of stone, both with sills, the lower wider and longer than the upper. Names are inscribed on all four faces of the plinth. On the top step of two sides of the memorial are planters, and an angled stone commemorating the fallen of World War II has been added on a third side of the steps. The structure stands on a brick cobbled area on the junction of the High Street, Church Lane and Ferry Road behind a low post and chain fence.
In October 2002 English Heritage offered a grant of £725 towards work to clean areas of the memorial affected by lichen with biocide, to clean the whole memorial with water and natural brushes, to re-cut the lettering in specific places to improve legibility, to re-paint the lettering using darkened limewash and to re-point open joints using hydraulic limewash mortar.
The memorial was designed by William West Neve and the builders were Messrs G Rowsell and Sons. It was unveiled on 22nd March 1920 and dedicated by the bishop of Oxford.
