This war memorial is in the form of a brick wall dating from the 18th century topped with a later limestone balustrade. Each square pier of the balustrade is inscribed with the names of fallen men of World War I. The centre of the wall is surmounted by a tapering Latin cross with wreath below carved in relief. The memorial is located on the north facing wall of St John’s churchyard, the parish church in Church Row, Hampstead, London.
In 2004/5 this memorial received a grant of £5,500 from English Heritage and the Wolfson Foundation. The cross had begun to lean due to differential settlement of the foundations. Therefore, the main works required were the dismantling of the cross and the strengthening of the foundations with piles. The brickwork was rebuilt and the cross re-erected.
The memorial is dedicated to those who fell in World War I. The inscription reads "Pro patria MCMXIV – MCMXVIII". The memorial dates from the 1920s and was designed by Temple Moore and Leslie Moore, a local architectural practice. Sadly, one of Temple Moore’s own sons is listed on the memorial.
The memorial is listed Grade II, as part of a set of gates and railings.
